Writer Jessica Ackerman: Dubai: A Shopper's Paradise

If you love to shop, you simply have to visit Dubai. This great city has turned shopping into somewhat of an art, providing plenty of shopping malls of all sizes and description. If you are shopping for high priced items, you can save quite a bit of money in Dubai, in spite of the import duties. Of course, you might not notice a big cost savings if you are shopping for lower priced items. However, there is such a wide selection of goods from which to choose that it's worth shopping there if only for the experience.

Carpets and Textile Items

If you are shopping for carpets, you'll be amazed at the variety to choose from in Dubai. In fact, the area is known for its great prices on high quality carpets. The process of carpet shopping can be quite an experience. Dealers will bring out carpet after carpet for you to view and enjoy. It's easy to get excited and enthusiastic in the presence of such beautiful goods. However, it's important to remember that bargaining is the expected norm when shopping. So, try to keep your enthusiasm hidden, so that the carpet dealer will readily bargain with you. If you are a shrewd shopper, you can get a high quality carpet at an amazing price.

If you'd like to buy an authentic pashmina shawl, you'll find plenty of bargains in Dubai. These wonderful cashmere shawls are as light as a feather, available in a wide variety of styles and colors. Of course, when shopping for a pashmina, you'll want to make sure you are buying one made from pure cashmere. Although there are fakes in Dubai just as there are in other areas of the world, by shopping carefully you can get a great deal on one that is authentic.

Luxurious Food Items

If you enjoy shopping for international foods, you'll love the shopping malls of Dubai. Whether you're looking for Bateel dates from Saudi Arabia or the even rarer Agwa dates, you'll find plenty from which to choose. Of course, you can't expect to always find Agwa dates, since the trees only yield fruit every few years. You simply can't beat the taste of these high quality dates from Saudi Arabia, so buy plenty. If you want to add a taste of Saudi Arabia to your coffee, pick up some luscious condensed milk flavored with cardamom. Saffron is another great item to stock up on when shopping in Dubai. If you've never cooked with zaatar, you are really missing out. This great spice mixture consists of sesame, oregano, marjoram and thyme. Buy some while you're in Dubai, and enjoy it in salads, soups and stews once you get home. If you are fond of Middle Eastern dishes, you'll also want to buy some sumac. This lemony-tasting spice is a staple in many Middle Eastern dishes. If you'd like to add a true touch of luxury to a simple dish of vanilla ice cream or sorbet, try serving it drizzled with rose syrup, which can also be found in the Dubai markets.
