Traveling to Denmark: The Jutland Peninsula

Many people consider Denmark to be one of the happiest and "livable" countries on the face of the Earth. If you have a chance to visit Denmark or live there on a short-term basis, you might just find yourself wanting to live there permanently. Although Denmark doesn't have a lot of flashy features, it does have a nice sense of contentment and "coziness" - or "hygge," as it's referred to locally. Although there are plenty of things to do and places to see in Denmark, the Jutland peninsula can be a nice place to visit. Here are a few sights to see if you are able to visit or live in this area.

Viborg

Viborg is located in central Jutland. It borders two lakes and has a rich religious history. Many people consider this town to be the perfect location for a romantic getaway. It is one of Denmark's oldest towns, dating back to when there were Viking settlements in the area during the 8th century. Because it is centrally located in the area, it naturally became important in terms of both religious and political matters.

If you get a chance to visit Viborg, you have to visit the Viborg Cathedral. Although the structure has been burned down and rebuilt in the past, the crypt from the original structure has been preserved. As it currently stands, there are parts of the cathedral that were built as late as 1876. There are many beautiful paintings depicting Bible stories in the cathedral, which can be viewed.

Silkeborg

Located to the south of Viborg on the Jutland peninsula, Silkeborg is a beautiful town with plenty of natural features to enjoy. The surrounding region is actually considered to be among Denmark's most beautiful areas. There are plenty of waterways and walkways that are perfect for canoeing, walking or cycling. Silkeborg is located in an area that features beautiful rolling hills and a lake. The lake divides the city into the north and south regions. The town is actually quite modern, and is a great place to enjoy modern art. If you enjoy skiing, Silkeborg has a resort that can be enjoyed year-round, thanks to its nylon track. Of course, in the winter there is plenty of natural snow for skiing. However, if you are looking to live in Denmark, the area surrounding Silkeborg also contains some of the most expensive properties, including lakeside villas and mansions.

If you enjoy modern art, Herning has much to offer. You can visit the Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, or the Carl-Henning Pedersen and Else Alfelt Museum across the street. Herning is home to the largest public collection of Piero Manzoni's work. Although there aren't a lot of other attractions in Herning besides the various art displays, it makes a nice day trip if you are visiting the other cities located in the Jutland peninsula region. You can take the train and the bus to travel between these cities, which will allow you to fully enjoy the sights and scenery along the way.
