Weather in Canary Islands in April
By:Laura Nazimiec

Located off the western coast of Morocco and belonging to Spain, the Canary Islands are a favorite European travel destination. Travel to the islands can be expensive and travelers looking to save money on airfare and accommodations will find that April is one of the best times of the year to travel to the Canary Islands.

Geography
The Canary Islands are an archipelago made up of seven main islands in the Atlantic Ocean. They are located more than 600 miles south of Spain and 70 miles off the coast of northern Africa. The main islands from west to east are La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. The location of the archipelago results in year-round mild weather. The islands located closer to the coast of Africa are often hotter and drier than those further away.

Temperature
Temperatures on the Canary Islands in April range from 61 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit (16 to 22 degrees Celsius). The average temperature throughout the month of April is 66 degrees F (19 degrees Celsius). It is warmer in the daytime and cooler in the evenings. The Canary Islands average eight hours of sunshine each day during April. These mild and comfortable temperatures make April a popular time to visit.

Rain and Humidity
The Canary Islands experience occasional storms and wet periods during the winter months. The rains are most frequent between the months of December and March. At other times throughout the year the islands experience very low humidity. The month of April sees very little rainfall on the islands. Precipitation levels in April average less than 0.6 inches (13 mm) and humidity remains low. The Canary Islands experience on average just three days of rainfall during the month of April.

Terrain
The climate in the Canary Islands varies from north to south across the archipelago. The northern coasts of the islands are often cooler and wetter than the arid southern coasts. Small deserts are located throughout the south of the Canary Islands while the northern regions are green and tropical. Winds from the west bring cooler air and humidity to the islands helping to counteract the arid heat of the tropics. The winds are stronger during the summer months when the weather is typically hot and dry with occasional clouds or fog.

Tourism
In addition to fishing and agriculture, tourism is a major industry on the Canary Islands. The Canary Islands receive around 10 million tourist each year. Most tourists choose to visit Tenerife Island, the most populous island of the archipelago. Tourist season peaks during the winter and summer months. The Carnival season in late February and early March is also a popular time to visit the islands. Visitors to the Canary Islands in April during the spring low-season benefit from travel promotions and reduced prices on airfare and accommodations.
