English schools in Europe

United Kingdom - Surrey
School:American School in England

TASIS The American School in England is a leading independent, co-educational university and college preparatory school in the UK. Enrolling American and international day students in nursery school through grade 12, and boarding students in grades 9 through 12, TASIS also offers a postgraduate option. Offering both the American high school diploma with a wide range of Advanced Placement courses and the International Baccalaureate diploma (IB), TASIS England seeks to carry on the tradition of excellence in American and international education in Europe established in 1955 by its sister school, The American School in Switzerland. Founded by Mrs. M. Crist Fleming, TASIS England opened its campus in Thorpe in 1976 to boarding and day students in grades 7 through 12. It has since added programs and facilities to accommodate the current school population of 750 students and over 100 faculty members.

The Upper School numbers approximately 350 students, of whom 160 board, with over 50 full-time and part-time faculty. Our Middle School is designed for 150 students and has its own identity, classrooms, academic programs, sports, and activities to address the specific needs of this special age group. In the Lower School, small classes for the 220 you students create a caring environment in which students progress through a content-rich curriculum bases on the Core Knowledge sequence.

TASIS England students represent over 40 nations and more than a dozen languages. Upper school students follow a college-preparatory curriculum and enter colleges and universities in the US, UK, Europe, and all over the world. The College Counseling Office offers experienced and individual guidance for each student. Internationalism is encouraged in classes, clubs, and activities, as well as through travel opportunities and in the residential setting. Small classes, academic and personal guidance, close student-faculty relationships, and careful blending of structure with personal freedom are designed to encourage students to assume increasing responsibility for their own growth and development.

The majority of teachers at TASIS England are American, although approximately one-quarter of the faculty are British. Of the 100 teachers, some 20 also serve as faculty residents in the dormitories. In addition to teaching, all faculty share in the responsibilities of advising, coaching, sponsoring activities, and chaperoning travel and weekend excursions. Faculty who are on the Boarding Team also participate in the evening and weekend supervision of the campus. Their contacts with students are many and varied, creating a close-knit community and enriching the life of the school.

An international school in a lovely English setting, TASIS England promotes cultural understanding and appreciation. By living, studying, and socializing with students from diverse backgrounds and cultures, and participating in field trips and excursions offered in the United Kingdom and throughout Europe, TASIS England students gain an international outlook and awareness. TASIS England endorses through all its programs an enthusiasm for life, for learning, and for personal growth within a purposeful community.

TASIS The American School in England is accredited by the New England Association of Schools & Colleges and the European Council of International Schools. Read the most recent NEASC and CIS accreditation report here.
