Motivation Tips

How to Motivate Yourself to Do Homework
By:Michelle Powell-Smith

Getting through homework can be a challenge, and kids are now getting more homework at a younger age. Learning how to motivate yourself to do homework can help with school success from the early grades through graduate school. Homework motivation can be harder than it sounds, but good work habits and some personal rewards can go a long way toward getting it done. Procrastination just results in stress, so getting work done in a timely manner is ideal.

Have a plan in place to finish your homework on time. Know what you need to do and when all assignments are due. Break larger projects into small chunks and divide them among the days available. Use an organizer, planner, calendar or PDA to keep track of work. Choose an organizational system you will use and keep up to date.

Set up a homework space. This might be as simple as a shelf stocked with office supplies and a comfy corner of the couch where you can sit with a laptop. It could be as elaborate as a home office. In general, a desk with space for computer components, notebooks and storage for post-it notes, highlighters and other study supplies is ideal. Your homework space should be quiet and distractions limited. Be sure to keep the space tidy and organized and do take the time to decorate it to your liking.

Make time for homework in your daily life. Being sure to have time set aside for homework can help a lot with homework motivation. Consider whether you do best with some time to relax before getting back to work after school or would prefer to just knock out your homework straight away.

Consider rewarding yourself when your work is done. This can be as simple as time to watch a favorite show or play a video game. Knowing that something pleasant comes after homework can help you motivate yourself to do homework. Young children may even do well with a time limit at which point homework time is over. For longer projects, reward yourself with occasional breaks to stretch, get a snack and move around a bit.

Create external homework motivators. If you are having a hard time motivating yourself to do homework for a given class, consider a study group or working with a friend to get through the work or project. Surround yourself with others who value good grades and participation in order to feel more motivated about homework.

Gather what you need before you start homework to reduce interruptions.

Make sure that you are physically comfortable when doing your homework for better homework motivation.

Avoid distractions during homework time, including computer chats and text messaging.
