Motivation Tips

How to Get Motivated to Go to the Gym
By:Collaborator

Studies have shown that people generally feel better once they get to the gym. To get motivated to go to the gym you will probably need more than that basic knowledge. Getting there is only half the battle, but it is a battle worth fighting.

Set obtainable goals. Make a goal to start out going to the gym three to five times per week. This will give you time to ease into it. It is easy to tell yourself that you will get up and go every morning. To get motivated to go to the gym, leave room for days that you just can't make it so that you don't get discouraged.

Start with what you like doing. It is too easy to give up on something that you hate. If the treadmill and stair machine aren't your thing, try the elliptical or aerobics classes. By going to the gym for things you actually enjoy, it gives you more of an incentive.

Stay hydrated throughout the day. Fatigue comes with dehydration. Make sure to drink at least eight ounces of water per day to stave off dehydration and motivation, decreasing fatigue. To get motivated to go to the gym you need to be alert and well rested.

Keep a diary. Keeping a log of your gym attendance will help you stay on track. To get yourself motivated to go to the gym, try putting stars or stickers on the days that you work out on a calendar. This way you can look at the calendar and see your progress or see that you need to pick up the pace.

Try rewards. For every week that you hit your goal, have a non-calorie ridden treat. Take yourself to a movie, the spa or buy a new outfit or purse. Do something small that will get and keep you motivated to go to the gym.

Use the buddy system. Recruit friends or family members to hit the gym with you. You can get each other motivated to go to the gym by having someone to help and this can be the key to success. But don't let their excuses be yours. If they can't make it on a planned day, go alone.
