Goal Achievement Tips - Setting Goals in the Short, Medium and Long-Term
By:Anthony D Carter

Goal setting success is easier if you break your goals up into smaller parts. Setting short term, medium term and long-term goals help you to achieve your goals in a structured manner. Here is a strategy for accomplishing your objectives.

Long-Term Goals- These are the most important goals. They give you the long range objective. Once you have the big picture in mind you can map out a plan which gives you what you want.

Determine what you want to achieve in the next few months or years. This will give you a target. Then you simply develop a plan in which you work backwards from that target.

Your long range aim can include such objectives as graduating from college, buying a car, or starting your own business. These types of dreams provide the foundation for successful goal setting.

Medium Term Goals- These objectives are used as stepping stones for your long-range mission. If you wanted to buy a new car then your first medium term objective may be to save a couple thousand dollars. This money could be used as a down payment if you wanted to finance your car or it could be used to establish lump sum for an investment savings account targeted at purchasing your vehicle. You may want to save two thousand dollars in one year.

You should have a time frame established for hitting your medium range goal. This will keep you progressing towards your long-term aims. You need to commit to hitting your medium range goal in a predetermined time frame in order to insure successful completion of your long-term objective.

Short Term Goals- These goals can be achieved more easily. Going back to example of buying a car. Your short term goal would be to save $167 a month for 12 months. This is a clear, yet simple goal that you can aim for. If you hit this goal every month then you set yourself up for the accomplishment of your long-range goal.

Your short term goals should be small parts of your medium term goal. They should guide you towards your long-term target. These work like a road map.

Once you have your short range goals identified you simply work towards achieving them. You can focus your attention on your short term goals with the confident assurance that hitting those goals will lead to you achieving your ultimate long term objective.
