Motivation Tips

How to Regain Lost Motivation
By:Errin Reaume

It's so easy to start a new project or exercise regimen. You have an initial burst of energy and optimism, but those feelings begin fade as the realities of the task presents itself, leaving you feeling depressed, frustrated or letdown. With the right mindset, you can overcome your negative feelings and rediscover your motivation.

1

Take 15 minutes in the morning to visualize your goals. Before getting out of bed, close your eyes, breathe deeply and think about what you are trying to accomplish. Don't allow the to-do list to overwhelm you, take it one step at a time. Think about how you will feel once your project is finished, imagine the sense of accomplishment and pride. Revert to this step every time you feel let down, overwhelmed or depressed.

2

Create a motivating yet calming environment. The ideal balance will make you feel productive without stress. Author and public speaker Tim Ferris finds he is most motivated to write at night, with the TV on mute and a cup of tea. The TV makes the room feel more social and the tea is soothing. Look around your work space, is it cluttered, noisy or distracting? Find the right factors in your environment to help keep your motivation high.

3

Prepare yourself for letdowns. Research the time it realistically takes to accomplish your task. If it takes longer than you imagined, spend more time on it daily or set a strict time everyday to work on it and follow through. You won't feel disillusioned if you understand what the reality of what you're dealing with.

4

Reevaluate your motivation. Think back to why you first started the project, what you wanted to accomplish and how you felt. Examine the reasons you've lost your motivation, such as a fear of failing or lack of results. The reasons for your lost motivation are often based on doubt and insecurity rather than reality. Refocus on your original motivations and the feelings they gave you.
