Goal Setting Tips - How to Assign Priorities to Your Goals
By:Roger Clark

Writing down a list with your goals is the first step to achieving them. If you don't know where to start, it will be easier for you to fit your goals into five categories, each category being represented by a question: What do you want to have? What do you want to see? What do you want to do? What do you want to give? Who do you want to become?

The next step is to assign time frames for each goal: try to estimate the time needed for you to accomplish each goal. This will help you focus more easily and increase the intensity of your work towards those goals. Having a list of 50 with different time frames will also show you whether the different areas of your life are covered, and if the size and difficulty of your goals are properly balanced.

However, you should be aware that if you concentrate on all 50 goals at the same time, will end in failure, distraction and frustration: you can't have everything in the same time. Therefore the next step is to break down the list of 50 into smaller chunks, that are easier to manage and this way you can focus your energy where you need it most. This way you will work with a greater sense of urgency, because you have so many places to go, people to meet, things to see.

A good method of narrowing down your list is to choose the three most important aspirations within the short, medium and long term time frame. You should have three things you want to achieve within one year, three that you want to achieve in a three-year period, another three within five, and three within ten years.

OK, now you have 12 goals that you consider to be the most important for you. Now you should figure out why each one is important to you. Why did you choose these goals, and why not other goals from your list of 50? What will you feel after you accomplish them?

Your subconscious processes are greatly helped if you read out loud your list of goals. Reading out has the effect of reinforcing the message in your brain. You should regularly repeat these goals, and the whys. Having these in the back of your mind is not enough: by repeating, you will be able to keep these goals in the front of your mind.
