Low Self-Esteem and Overtime Work
By:Liv Miyagawa

Working too much can be a sign of low self-esteem.

Of course there are exceptions as always. You may for example be working overtime during a limited time period to complete a project that you're really passionate about, or your job is your greatest hobby and you love it so much that you want to do it every second. These are good reasons for being a workaholic.

Unfortunately, many people who overwork themselves do so because they lack self-esteem. Here are some negative reasons for working too much that can have their roots in low self-esteem:

* You work overtime because everybody else is doing so. You don't want to be the first one to leave your office in the evening.

* You don't feel like you have accomplished enough at work. You fear that your boss and/or colleagues think that you are not competent enough.

* You fear that your boss and/or colleagues will think that you're not working hard enough if you don't work overtime.

* You keep working because you feel that it is the only thing that you are good at.

* You work because you don't really know what else to do.

If you are overworking because of any of those reasons you may very likely have low self-esteem.

A person with high self-esteem

* is not bothered by what others may think about him/her

* feels competent, not just at work, but in other areas of life as well

* has various interest and passions

What is the solution for workaholics with low self-esteem? Work less and raise your self-esteem so that you feel good about working less. You will notice benefits both in terms of your physical and mental wellbeing.
