Common Myths About Depression

Many people do not recognize depression as a serious health disorder that needs a cure. Most cultures have formed certain opinions about the condition and many of these opinions are not fact but myth. There is so much that has been said about depression and you can get lost in the maze of conceptions or misconceptions. This article explores some of the common misconceptions that you will find and shows you the truth as a matter of fact.

o 'Depression is not a real disease or illness'. This is the statement that many live by and for this reason; they never take those who are depressed seriously. According to medical evidence by research, clinical depression will affect the whole being of a person including their body. Stress hormone levels for those depressed are higher and brain inactivity in certain areas of the brain will be noted upon examination of these patients. Depression has biological causes and it can also be genetic. This goes to show that it is a disease that needs to be taken seriously for a solution to be sought.

o 'There is nothing you can do to treat it'. This is another myth that you will find people believing. Since this is an illness, there are medication options that have been seen to provide relief in 80% of patients who seek help. There is cure for this condition and there are many other alternative remedies that work well to alleviate the disorder.

o 'Depression is just like having a bad mood'. Again, this is a myth that needs to be dispelled. A bad mood will come and go while depression can cripple you. In other words, it is more than just a bad mood and should never be ignored. There are so many people who have taken their lives and you can bet that they were not just in a bad mood.

o 'Depression affects those who are weak'. This is not true at all because it can happen to anybody. It does not discriminate whether you are rich or poor, black or white or whether you are outgoing or reserved. This is a condition that will happen to anyone due to different causes. Some people might feel weak for being depressed but this is how the illness presents itself.

o 'Depression will go away on its own'. There are people who overcome depression without seeking help or employing any remedy. However, depression in most cases will persist and become worse if let untreated. There are many who suffer all their lives and the best thing is to seek professional help.

o 'Depression is normal for the older generation'. Although depression will be rife in many older persons, it is not normal to suffer from the condition and you should not accept to suffer. Many older people will feel lonely, isolated and left out and this is why the illness will be common amongst them. However, the older folk should be on the front line getting the help they need to avoid this pitfall.
