Routines - Create Efficiency
By:Dorothy M. Neddermeyer, PhD

Do you have a routine to accomplish the regular and additional tasks in your life? A disjointed routine can leave even the most robust person exhausted at the end of a busy day, not to mention for those who are managing many responsibilities. Or in the worst case, not only leave you exhausted, but leaving tasks undone.

A well-honed routine can be a boon whether you are managing many responsibilities or simply managing your usual workload. The rigors of modern life add to the richness of your life while also requiring great attention and energy. When your life is structured, the tasks you are responsible for can be laid out the day before, so that you seldom waste precious moments wondering what to tackle first.

You will seldom overlook the myriad obligations you have because you have prepared yourself to tackle them in a given sequence in advance. Though the unexpected can come into play, the strength and fluidity of a routine allows you to manage it. The discipline you exhibit as a result of having a routine helps you create a methodology that maximizes your efficiency.

If you have avoided forming a well-honed routine for fear of become regimented in your behavior, thus losing spontaneity, take a second look at what a routine provides. If you know what you need to do and when it needs to be done it can help you structure your day so as to ensure you can attend to all your goals and objectives. Albeit, you have a lot on your plate, you will have more leisure and spontaneous time at your disposal than you might think.

Here are easy steps to develop a balanced routine.

1. Start early—some people start their day as early as 4:30 a.m.
2. Exercise every morning—at least 30 minutes.
3. Be mindful of the source, form, and timing of your news.
4. Check email before leaving for the office—you can ward off any possible snags in your day.
5. Problem-solve—your mind is at its clearest and better-suited to solving important problems.
6. Make family time—in the morning and evening whenever possible.
7. Be creative with your routine.

If you make the most of your time through a well-honed routine, you will seldom feel rushed or overwhelmed by the responsibilities.
