Resume and Interview Tips

Cover Letters - 4 Ways to Bomb a Cover Letter
By:Roland Johanson

When out on the hunt for the perfect job, the best or worst way to commit "employment suicide" is by writing an ineffective cover letter that shows weakness and poor decision-making skills. Remember, a cover letter is the one first impression you get with a hiring manager, and can make you or break you when it comes to obtaining an interview.

Here are 4 things to be aware of when writing your CV letter to submit with your resume:

Address the right person. Using Mr. or Miss is the safe way out, but you will definitely impress the hiring manager if you take the time to do the research and find out exactly who you need to send your job application to. There is automatically a feeling of personal attachment when someone's name is addressed on a CV letter, so be sure to find out who will be reading your letter and make sure to put their name in the greeting line.

Be aware of how many times you use the phrases "I think," or "I believe." These are phrases that convey weakness and low self-esteem. Keep your CV letter confident and strong.

Stay to the point and keep it short. They say that a hiring manager spends 20 seconds on a CV letter. With this in mind, you need to keep your reader's attention and make them see what a great candidate you are for the job. This means keeping your letter to a few short paragraphs, and never making your CV letter more than one page (except in very rare circumstances).

Sign it. Don't forget your John Hancock at the end of your cover letter, and make sure that you sign it with confidence. Big, bold signatures give the impression that you have your act together, are self-confident in the points you set forth in your cover letter, and that you know you're the best one for the job.
