Resume and Interview Tips

Why and How to Proofread Your Cover Letter Before Submitting it With Your Resume
By:Roland Johanson

Before sending out your cover letter and resume for a job opening, it is best to proofread, proofread, proofread!

Nothing is more important when it comes to catching a hiring manager's attention than a clean, excellent written cover letter. There are a few things to take note of when reviewing yours before submitting it to the appropriate department.

Here are a few things to keep an eye out for:

1. Spell check. I cannot stress how important it is to spell check your CV letter. Nothing shows laziness like a person that "pays attention to details" but doesn't spell check their work. A hiring manager will instantly throw away a poorly checked and misspelled cover letter in a heartbeat.

2. Keep your words simple. Stay away from any informal writing, and watch your punctuation. Exclamation marks should never be used, and contractions, such as "I'm" or "I've," should be broken down to their raw form.

3. Stay away from using "I" too much, and make sure it doesn't start every single sentence of your CV letter. Keep the flow conversational but professional, and make sure you don't sound like a broken record!

4. Keep your CV letter down to one page-you want to make sure that the resume speaks for itself-don't let your CV letter speak for it, but rather highlight the best parts and bring them to the attention of the hiring manager reading it.

Follow the simple guidelines in order to write a compelling CV letter. Remember, this is your chance to sell yourself-be confident, professional, and don't slack when it comes to the specifics-something as simple as a misspelled word can send your cover letter and resume to the executive's trash can.
