Resume and Interview Tips

Telephonic Interview: Getting selected over phone
By:Catherine Z Jones

Here are a few interview tips that can be beneficial for you:

1.1.BE PREPARED: Be prepared for the interview by working upon a few points
Change your answering machine to something professional during a job hunt. I am sure you don't want your interviewer to hear JLO or AKON singing while your phone rings.
Take notes or pin your resume next to the phone.
Incase you know the time of the interview, change the call waiting option. It can be very distractive.
Please lock yourself in the room so that the cacophony outside doesn't disturb the course of the interview.
Be prepared to be asked questions about your previous employer.
Finish your research about the organization way before time, so that a sudden telephonic interview doesn't puzzle/scare you.
1.2.HOW TO ANSWER:
Be short and precise. Avoid unnecessary jabber on the phone. If you feel the need to fill in the gap , you can ask questions about the company
Be confident and stand up and talk. It automatically makes you attentive.
Answer all questions politely. Don't hesitate to discuss your demands and expectations from the post.
Studies prove that when you dress appropriately, your responses automatically become professional. So make sure you don't attend the call in your bath robe.
Take constant notes and be attentive.
Remember your ultimate goal is to sell yourself.
Confirm your callers name before the interview begins and try addressing him by his first name while talking.
1.3.BE PATIENT:
Let the interviewer do most of the talking
Listen intently before answering.
1.4.BASIC MANNERISM :
Do not chew gum or eat and drink while the telephonic interview is on. It gets noticed instantly.
Smile It comes through from your voice
Avoid ahmm, euh, etc.
A successful telephonic interview will need efforts from your end. Ask a friend to call up and practice. It's very important to impress the interviewer here. With no body language to judge from, it's tougher to convince the caller. As rightly said, "Practice makes a man perfect," you will need some practice to excel at telephonic interviews.
