Cover Letters For A Curriculum Vitae (CV) - How To Avoid Getting Yourself In A Tight Spot
By:Suzette Dean

Many people, if not all, struggle in writing a cover letter for a curriculum vitae (CV). This is because people mistake a cover letter for many things. Little did they know that a cover letter for a CV is really simple to do. It should be brief and concise. It is an introduction of yourself, only that it is written. It usually answers three simple but important questions.

The first question that a cover letter for a CV must answer is "What position are you applying for?" This question is really easy right? So you may be wondering why this question is important. The very reason is that indicating the position that you are applying for will lessen the "qualification and skill matching" problem of the employer or hiring managers. Remember that companies usually have a lot of job openings for different positions. So, by indicating the position that you are interested in, the employer can easily match your skills with the position qualifications.

The second question that it must answer is "How did you learn about the open position?" Another easy question right? The answer to this question is important to employers. Why? They would like to know your means of seeking a job, or perhaps the person who told you about the job may be a reference. Remember that some companies actually call references to counter check on the performance of an applicant (if previous jobs were indicated) or the ability of the aspirant (for the entry-level jobs).

The third question that a cover letter for a CV must answer is "Why are you fit for the position?" This question may sound simple but can be very tricky. Remember that you are stating your personal opinion about why you are perfect for the position in a company that you have no experience in. So in answering this question, you must be realistic and honest. Otherwise, when you are called for an interview and you are not able to match the claims in you cover letter, it will be very awkward both for you and the employer.

The three questions are simple yet essential, easy yet tricky. Of course, at the end of your letter, do not forget to thank the employer and to indicate your contact details. But remember that your document should not only answer these questions but also draw the employers attention to the attached CV. Otherwise, it will be just a cover letter for a CV but never a tool to notice your CV.
