Resume and Interview Tips

Dressing For the Interview
By:Raymond James

Before going for an interview ensure that your attire is appropriate. Even with an excellent academic record and correctly answered questions, if you not know how to dress appropriately for an interview then you may not be chosen for the job.

Always dress neatly for any interview. You will be judged on the basis of the clothes you are wearing at the time. Even if the employees of the company are dressed in casual attire you should not be tempted to dress casually. The first impression you give should not be merely good but excellent. Your clothes must be clean and ironed properly and your shoes polished. You should not have scuffmarks on your shoes as they reveal a lack of attention to detail.

For an interview men should be dressed in a suit and tie. The tie must be straight and tied properly. Ensure that your teeth are clean and hair is properly groomed, before going for an interview. It is not appropriate in any interview situation to wear t-shirts and jeans or to be remotely scruffy in appearance.

You will make a much better impression if you are dressed formally in a suit and tie than if you attend the interview wearing a t-shirt and jeans. Your choice of suit should preferably be of conservative colours such as dark grey or navy and the shirt should be white or match the suit and have long sleeves. It is always better if the pants have a belt and the colour of the belt should match your shoes. Socks should be dark and shoes should be a conservative style and colour and made from leather. Your hairstyle must be neat and professional. Nails should be neatly trimmed and a beard, if you have one, should be shaved or trimmed. It also will appear professional if you carry a briefcase. Enquire about the dress code of the company through contacts to make sure that your standard fits that of the company.

Women should also be dressed in a business suit preferably when attending an interview. Studies have shown that many women do not know the correct way to dress for an interview. You should not try to be extra fashionable. Your suit skirt must be long enough to allow you to sit comfortably in front of the interviewer without the skirt riding up. Under no circumstances should you wear miniskirts, sweaters or blouses that are tight or strappy sandals. Limited jewellery is the best option whilst dangling earrings or cheap jewellery convey the wrong impression.

Do not use a hair spray for hairstyling. Pantyhose should be neutral in colour and your perfume and makeup should be very light. Ensure that your nails are clean and neatly manicured yet unpolished. Remember to carry a portfolio or a stylish briefcase with you. Avoid carrying a disorganized or oversized handbag for the job interview. If you feel the cold, you can wear a scarf.
