Resume and Interview Tips

Job Interview Attire
By:Raymond James

In an interview as well as any preparation for job interview questions and answers, your choice of attire plays a very important role. Your behavior, interpersonal skills and aptitude are equally vital essentials that reflect your personality. Suitable attire assists in creating a positive image and indicates that you are serious about the job and are aware of the nature of the industry in which you are attempting to gain employment. In some industries where customer contact and image presentation is a vital component, your attire will be critical.

Your attire should be appropriate and well fitted but it should not be the focus of attention. Such things may create an unfavourable impression for the interviewer. Even if you are aware that other employees of the company dress casually in the work place, you need to ensure that you are dressed in formal attire for the interview unless otherwise informed.

A two piece matching light coloured suit always works the best and is the safest choice for women. But if the job does not allow you to wear a suit then you can wear jeans, especially if it is in an outdoor environment. With regard to appropriate colours, navy, dark grey (and black for women) are safe enough, but avoid other colours which may be considered too extreme or too dark.

You should wear clothes that fit well. An investment in one quality outfit, dependent upon your budget is advisable. You can change the shirt and tie, or blouse for women, that co-ordinate with the colour of the suit. Select good quality silk ties and avoid very fashionable and funky types of ties.

It is preferable that men wear long sleeved shirts irrespective of the season and be sure to choose colours such as light blue or a solid blue with conservative stripes. Wear dark coloured socks that are mid calf length so that no skin can be seen when you sit down. When it comes to shoes, leather, lace up, or slip-on business shoes, preferably in black or dark brown are appropriate. Buy a good pair of shoes that are appropriate to wear on a special occasion. Along with the shoes, a black or brown leather belt completes your perfect job interview attire.

Women should ensure that they are well groomed and should apply make up that is light such as lipstick, eyeshade etc. to present a natural appearance. Wear simple elegant jewellery such as a small diamond or such that will complement your professional look. Wear a conservative watch. Set your hairstyle well so that you will look professional and not akin to a college student.

If you carry a purse, keep it small and simple especially if you also wish to carry a briefcase. The colour of your purse should co ordinate well with your whole attire. A leather bag or purse will be an excellent choice.

Your clothes must always be clean, neatly pressed and fit properly. Don't carry a large briefcase: carry only the most important documents with you. To complete your attire, you may spray light perfume, but be sure that it is not overpowering or a possible irritant.
