Resume and Interview Tips

Writing a Good Resume - Quick, Easy Fixes For Common Mistakes
By:Dave Kovic

One of the fundamentals of writing a good resume is eliminating mistakes. 15 million other people are looking for a job today. Employers want any excuse to thin the resume pile. Can you really afford to have errors on your resume? Since there are over 100 common mistakes, it's easy understand how some details get overlooked.

Here are some quick tips for writing a good resume that will keep you in the game:

Don't give unnecessary personal information that could lead to discrimination.

Your age, weight, martial status, sexual orientation, and religion should never be included. It only takes a moment in the mind of the recruiter to disqualify you based on a bias that will probably never be discovered.

A low grade point average can also work against you.

The rule is if it's not notable enough to be followed by the words cum laude, magna cum laude, or summa cum laude it doesn't belong on your resume. You may be proud of your 3.75 grade average, but if you're up against a candidate with a 3.89 guess who wins? If you can claim an honorary distinction then simply state it and skip the actual number.

Don't use your current place of employment for any part of your contact information.

Not even your email address. It leaves a bad taste in the mouth of the hiring manager. No company wants to pay for an employee's job search.

Make your resume easy on the eyes.

Keep your margins, fonts, and headlines consistent for readability. A complicated page is a turn-off to a hiring manager. With a fat stack of resumes on their desk, what an employer really wants is something easy to scan and understand. If your page layout is unnecessarily fussy it may get tossed aside in frustration.
