Fun Whiteboard Games
By:Marissa Decker

Whiteboards are a popular tool to use for educational purposes in and out of the classroom. Instead of using a traditional chalkboard, classrooms are equipped with whiteboards. Interactive lessons or games are projected on to the whiteboard surface and kids participate by writing on the board with dry erasable markers. A smaller whiteboard can be used at home also. Kids can play fun games and learn at the same time.

Tic-Tac-Toe
Tic-Tac-Toe is a simple game that can be played anywhere. If there is extra time left at the end of class, let the kids play tic-tac-toe on the whiteboard. Takes turns allowing the kids to go up to the whiteboard, two at a time, and play a round. Whoever wins that round, gets to play the next player. A simple strategy game that will get their minds working while providing entertainment at the same time. Kids can also play this game with a family member at home. Draw a tic-tac-toe grid on a smaller whiteboard and find a family member to participate with. When the round is up, erase the grid and start all over again.

Hangman
An ordinary game like Hangman can become fun and interesting when played on the whiteboard. Instead of using the traditional paper and pencil, the game is displayed on the whiteboard for the whole class to see. One student is chosen to go up to the whiteboard and choose a word for his class to guess. He will draw dashes on the whiteboard for each letter of the word and draw a noose where the man will be hung. The other students will have a chance to guess letters in order to figure out the word. For each letter guessed wrong, another piece of the man will be added to the noose. If guessed correctly, the letter will be placed on top of the proper dash. This will go on until someone guesses the correct word or the man is hung. Whoever guesses the correct word, will then have a turn at the whiteboard.

Pictionary
Another fun game to play on the whiteboard is Pictionary. This game can be played in the classroom or at home on a smaller size whiteboard. If played in the classroom, split the students into two teams. Have each student write an object on a small piece of paper and put it into a hat. The first student chosen from each team to draw will choose a word from the hat. The teacher will set the timer and the student will begin drawing on the whiteboard. Whoever guesses the correct word, will receive a point for her team and be the next to draw. The team to reach 10 points first, wins the game. If played at home, the same rules apply.

Whiteboard Scrabble
Scrabble has been a game played by many people over the years. To play in class, have one student write a word on the whiteboard. The next student will write a word using one of the letters from the previous word written. If a student uses over eight letters in a single word, he gets double points. The student to reach 100 points wins the game. If you have a magnetic whiteboard at home, scrabble can be played by the whole family in their spare time. Start out with one word and stick it to the fridge. As family members pass the fridge, they can add a word to the board. No points are given and no one wins; it's just a fun way to keep the family connected.
