Technology for ESL

How to Empower Teachers to Integrate Technology Into the Classroom
By:Erin Schreiner

Lessons rich in technology promote student engagement and allow for extensive exploration of academic topics. Through the use of technology, science teachers can allow their students to travel with a blood cell through the veins and arteries of our body. History teachers can place their students on a Civil War battlefield, and math teachers can create graphic displays that demonstrate complex mathematical concepts. While technology is undeniably useful, the presence of technology within a school isn't enough. Teachers also need to be empowered to use the technology and aided in developing technology-rich, engaging lessons that capture student interest and increase understanding.

Point out the benefits of technology integration. Many seasoned teachers are reluctant to modify their established teaching style. Encourage them to integrate technology by pointing out the potential benefits of using technology and providing specific examples of ways in which technology could fit into their current lesson plans.

Inform teachers of available technology. Provide each teacher with a detailed description of the technology available to them, as well as an explanation of where to sign out each technology type, and a basic description of how to use the available technologies.

Educate teachers about available technology. Provide teachers with an intensive technology training, allowing them to develop a familiarity with the available technology and, thereby, increasing the likelihood that they will use the technology options available to them.

Direct teachers to technology-rich lesson resources. The Internet is littered with pre-planned technology lessons. Provide teachers with links to technology-based lesson banks that align with the technologies available in your building. The ease of these pre-planned lessons will encourage teachers to use technology.

Model technology-rich lessons for teachers. Demonstrate technology lessons, allowing teachers to see first-hand how engaging these technology-heavy lessons can be. Include information from a variety of subjects in your demonstrations, ensuring that all subject teachers can see the applicability to their area of study.

Visit with teachers to discuss their use of technology. Provide continued support to teachers as they begin to integrate technology into their lessons. Teachers may need help as they begin to use the unfamiliar technologies. Be sure to provide the help that they require so that they don't become frustrated and turn away from the available technology options.
