A Beautiful Destination : Antigua

Antigua is one of the two islands of Antigua and Barbuda in the Caribbean. Its one of the most sought after get away island for tourists, attracted by its ever energetic atmosphere that also speaks of immense peace and harmony. With a population of about 68,000, Antigua is located 17° 6' N. and 61° 45' W. This island discovered by none other than the famous Columbus got its independence from UK in 1981 only but already its aura beckons people from around the globe and is one of the hub for tourist’s getaway. Well, their local dialects often sound quite rough for a listener, almost like an argument but in fact it’s simply the way they speak, emphasizing their energetic outlook.

Its geography:

The island of Antigua has no central range of mountains and lacks rivers and springs as well as the unhealthy deforestation, suffers from frequent droughts. Though yes, the high rocky coast is indented by bays and arms of the sea, and many form splendid harbors like that of the famous St John's being safe and excellent for tourists. Its soil is considered quite fertile too; sugar and pineapples, sweet potatoes, yams, maize and guinea corn are grown aplenty. The only city of Antigua is the capital of the island, St. John.

Economy:

Main source is tourism, attracting hundreds of tourists to the luxury Caribbean for a lifetime experience. As expected, great hotels and resorts are located around the coastline and the island's only airport V C Bird airport is thus always busy. East Caribbean dollar is the official currency. Month of April and May brings another pack of expectant tourists for the well known Antigua Sailing Week, filling the exotic island with a wondrous mixture of many sailing vessels, sailors as well as spectators to race and party as well.

Antigua is easily reached through the regular flights or one can also take a leisure travel by cruise ships such as the Royal Caribbean and Disney Cruise Lines. Once on the island, cars can be hired quickly though its regulation of 30mph speed limit may be somewhat tedious for some. If not, there are the taxis too and they are very cheap actually. Some of the must see spots while in Antigua are the carnival during July to August in St John’s Recreation Ground where all sorts of galas and festivals are held. Nelson Dockyard also is not to be missed. Also one sport noticed almost in every available space is the cricket.

Antigua’s eastern coastline is also great for scuba diving. Tourists very often rave about the awesome fishes of the reefs. Besides the water’s very clear and so snorkeling is excellent and great thing is, it’s comparatively very cheap. It’s also perfect for sailing. From tiny dinghy’s to cruisers can be hired, giving you the chance to discover all the hooks and corners of the natural harbors in your own leisure. Also parties at Shirley Heights added with the blast of Antiguan music are worth it. For couples, the amazing sunset over English Harbour is the talk of the town. While in the island, better taste its national dish called Fungi and Salt fish. Just stay cool and follow the standard rules for safety and you will definitely have a gala time.
