Newspaper Article Writing Tips - Things Beginners Should Know
By:Sean R Mize

This article is for those people who are thinking about sinking their teeth into the field of newspaper writing. In here, I'll offer some of the most important tips that you need to keep in mind when writing your copies to make sure that you'll stay on track.

Write only those stories that are fresh and newsworthy. People buy and read newspapers for one good reason: they would like to keep themselves posted on the latest events or stories that are going on around them. So, instead of talking about things that happened in the past, look for stories that are relatively fresh and extremely interesting. Depending on your assigned beat, you can talk about the latest in the government and politics or talk about the latest in the national and global economy. You also have the option of writing about entertainment, sports, or feature stories.

Get straight to the point. You're not allowed to beat around the bush when writing news articles. This is not only because you only have short space to fill but also because your target audience want it that way. So, learn how to get your thoughts across using as few words as possible. You should be able to tell your stories using 300-500 words.

Use catchy headlines. I am sure you would like your target audience to take interest on your articles. This will happen if you master the art of writing attention-grabbing titles. Learn how to summarize your stories using 5-10 highly effective words. The idea here is to make sure that your target audience will know exactly the content of your copies by just reading your headlines. Make each word count.

Always use the inverted pyramid technique. You don't have a guarantee that your audience will read your articles until the end. But it's your job to make sure that they will understand your story no matter what. This is the reason why the use of inverted pyramid technique is highly recommended. This means putting all the crucial information on your first paragraph. Tell your readers the name of the person/s involved, what happened, where it occurred, and the effect of this event to their lives. You can then put all the supporting details on your succeeding paragraphs.

Verify your data. Using unverified information is one big no-no in the field of news writing. You cannot afford to misinform your readers otherwise, you'll lose your credibility in a heartbeat. So, I highly recommend that you verify all the data that you've gathered and ensure that they are all based on facts before you deliver them to your target audience.

Proofread your articles. Be a responsible journalist and make sure that your news articles are perfect before you submit them to your editors. Read them out loud and ensure that they contain complete information, that they're well-written, and that they're entertaining to read. Also, ensure that they're free from factual, spelling, and grammar errors.
