Vietnam - Hanoi (Ba Dinh)
School:Hanoi International School

Hanoi International School offers Kindergarten through Grade 13 (IB) education in a small caring environment centrally located in the embassy district of Hanoi.

The school offers the IGCSE and the IB Diploma program in the Secondary School. The Primary School offers a diverse international curriculum that includes music, foreign language, computer technology, and physical education.

There is a full after school activity program available for both Primary and Secondary students. Secondary students can also participate in athletic teams.

In 1996 a joint venture company was launched following an agreement between the Centre for Education Technology (CET) and International School Development Inc.(ISD). The joint venture ship was on the basis of 30% interest to CET, which is the Vietnam side, and 70% interest to ISD, the US side.

The company then opened Hanoi International School in late 1996 using premises leased from the school next to today’s HIS. The student roll at the end of that first year was 54 from Pre-School to Grade 11. Within that first cohort of students 15 nationalities were represented. On the teaching side there were 13 teaching staff, including the Principal, and 16 Vietnamese support staff. From this list there is only one staff member who is still with HIS, Mr. Vu Trung Chinh, our purchasing officer.

The school continued to grow steadily and moved to the current building in the 1999-2000 academic year. From its start HIS was an IB school receiving its membership certificate in 1996. The class of 1998 was the first set of IB Diploma graduates. From the start the school also delivered the Cambridge IGCSE programme. HIS became a member of ECIS, the European Council of International Schools, in July of 1998.

Today we have a student roll of 252, representing 35 nationalities, and a teaching staff of 36. We continue to offer the IB Diploma and are introducing the IB PYP (Primary Years Programme) as the curriculum for the Elementary School. The IGCSE programme continues to be the curriculum for Grades 10-11.

HIS continues to pride itself on being a ‘family’ school with a strong community spirit. There are growing pressures to expand our capacity for students but we have almost reached the optimum for the current site. A dynamic and exciting future lies ahead for HIS. This is an opportunity to reflect on and pay respects to all those teachers, support staff, families and Board members who have all contributed to the growth and development of HIS.
