What Mum Didn't Tell You About Being A Better Person, Starting Right Now!
By:Andre Palmer

Do you want to be a better person but don't really know where, or how to start? It is easier than you think and there are a number of things you can do to get started. Do something nice today to make yourself, and others feel better. Here are some suggestions that you can get started with right away!

Say something friendly to someone you meet and try to smile and look happy. Turn off that critical voice in your head and start talking friendly without yourself as well.

If you have the chance, take the initiative and talk to someone who is new, or shy, in school or at work. Invite them out for a coffee, or lunch.

Help someone who needs it when you get a chance. For example, help an elderly person across the street, or offer to carry their shopping bags for them.

Let someone pass you in line, or in traffic.

Dare to change the topic when others begin to gossip, or talk about someone else behind their back. Walk a way or let them know you are not ok with talking about other people behind their backs.

Write a letter of appreciation to an organization or social movement that you think actually do make a difference, and some good in the world!

Work on your listening skills. This is a big one for me and I really try to remind myself on a daily basis to be a better listener. I have a friend who is a really good listener, and to be able to give another person the gift of your total presence and concentration when they are talking is great!

Tell a few inspiring and encouraging things to another person every day, and as many as possible to yourself.

Open the door for someone. It is said that for every time that you open a door for someone, seven others do the same thing.

Start writing a gratitude journal or joy report. Take a moment every night before going to sleep to think about your day and write down the things that made you happy and grateful.

Turn off the autopilot. Take a walk or go for a ride and think about how you really want to live. What characteristics do you want to develop? How do you want to be towards, respond to and treat other people? How can you contribute to make the world a better place?

The selfish reason to choose goodness

More and more scientific studies are showing that goodness is actually something that pays of. When we are generous a pleasure center in the brain gets activated that gives us a good experience from treating other people well. It is related to the same pleasure centers that gets activated by good food, sex or drugs. And as with all pleasure, it is addictive.
