Resume and Interview Tips

How to Make a Good Impression at a Job Interview
By:Roger Clark

When you are selected to participate in a job interview, it means that there is something about you that the employer liked. You will want to take advantage of this and not ruin the good impression you have made in your resume. Expressing your thoughts when you are face to face with the interviewer is more difficult than when writing your resume or your resume cover letter. You will have to control your nerves in order to give your interviewer a positive impression.

In addition to presenting all the details about yourself in a clear and professional manner, you will also have to act properly during the interview. This means that you should not engage in small talk with the interviewer. Even if you exchange a joke at the beginning of the interview to release the tension, do not forget that your career depends on this interview, so act professionally and remain serious during the entire period of the job interview.

Another very important aspect which may influence the way in which you are perceived by the employer is the way you look. Yes, first impressions do count and if you do not respect the dress code appropriate for an interview, you may not stand a chance of getting the job. The reason is simple - not obeying the dress code means that you do not like following rules. Employers usually avoid applicants who ignore rules, even if they are highly qualified for the position and otherwise suitable for the job.

Also, make sure that you do not wear too many jewels or wear too much perfume. People who go over the top with these items at a job interview have less chances of being hired because any employee who represents the company will have to adhere to the company's standards.

It is recommended not to chew gum during the interview. This will prevent you from speaking clearly and is also bad manners as well. It is also advisable that you refrain from smoking before the interview, as you will smell of cigarette smoke and create a bad impression.

Last, but not least adopt a confident attitude, even though inside you are feeling anxious. Let them see that you are a person who knows how to stay in control under pressure and that you feel good about yourself.
