Resume and Interview Tips

Resumes For Older Workers
By:Brian G Chadra

Writing a resume for the older worker can be complicated depending on the amount of work experience already obtained or the number of jobs held in this uncertain market. It can be difficult to summarize the great deal of employment skills that have been gained over this same length of work span. What is the best way to get the point across without running the risk of rambling on incessantly?

The easiest way to accomplish this is to make a list of all the duties from each of the major jobs in ones career. These can then be examined and consolidated both for matching skills and to applicable occupations. There are of course, things that will apply to any work environment. They can be listed last when describing the work experience on a resume. Be sure to put the most important skills or duties at the top since this is what most readers focus on when skimming a paper for content. Also, make sure to include keywords that are relevant to the industry and currently in use. For example an IT worker might use terms like gateway or routing protocol to demonstrate knowledge of the computer industry.

The point is to show an employer some sense of knowledge in the occupational area. Being an experienced worker can be a drawback in some respects, but not being able to adequately describe qualifications should not be one of them. Again, make sure to include the best ones first and follow from there. Good luck!

Until next time,

Brian
