Resume and Interview Tips

Award Winning Resume Design
By:Brian G Chadra

The basic resume design hasn't chanced much in the last fifty years. It has five sections: header, job objective, education, experience and miscellaneous. You list your name, what you are looking for in regards to a job, educational background and work experience, finishing up with a few personal touches about yourself. When you are finished, it is submitted and you cross your fingers, hoping to get a phone call. Let's try to increase those odds by making your resume a sales letter instead of a mere document.

Going on the offensive will work to get you the much needed consideration that you deserve. But how is this process accomplished? First of all, one of the sections that has to be altered is the job objective. This is passive at best, stating only what you are seeking in a specific area. It typically doesn't indicate what type of individual that you are and what you have accomplished. By rewriting this paragraph as to who you are, what you have done and what your are seeking, you have effectively increased your "star power."

These have to be objective statements (i.e. easily measurable) so that employers can quantity them to their validity. For example don't state "experienced manager", but rather manger with 15 years experience preparing cost analyst sheet and supervising employees. See how the second one puts forth your background in a positive light. This will serve as a springboard for the rest of your resume (i.e. sales page). So treat the rest of the paper in a similar fashion and you will surely get more attention. Good luck!

Until next time,

Brian
